Off, Country examines, through first person accounts and oral histories, the nuclear landscape of the American Southwest. The fallout and shockwaves of this history can still be felt today and will continue to be present in the landscape for the next 25,000 years.

Thanks to you and other supporters like you, over 250 New Mexico Actors have participated in our Actor Showcase. And there have been nearly 70 that have taken advantage of the acting workshops provided through the New Mexico Film Foundation.

Melissa Chambers was one of the actors selected to appear live on stage in our first Actor Showcase in 2014. She has gone on to appear in a number of films and television shows. Two of our younger actors under the age of 17 have been featured in national magazines and appeared in commercials and nationally screened films.

Every day, your support makes stories like their’s possible. And our 2019 New Mexico Actors Showcase submission process has begun on December 1st. 

Today, we’re launching our 2018 Year-End Campaign.  Our goal is to help an additional 300 people next year, but there are so many more that we need to encourage, train and assist in the Above the Line filmmaking community.

That’s why our goal for this campaign is to raise $75,000 by December 31st.  If we raise that amount, we’ll be able to develop workshops, programs and grants available throughout New Mexico.

LADY BELLADONNA’S TALES FROM THE INFERNO

AT THE BORDERLANDS FILM FESTIVAL, OCTOBER 5, 2018!

 

September 14, 2018 – What do you get when you mix a vainglorious, sin-collecting demoness, a fallen Aryan despot, the worst filmmaker of all time, and a handful of suspenseful tales from the dark side of humanity? The answer is Lady Belladonna’s Tales From The Inferno, the latest feature-length anthology from writer/director David Salcido and Las Cruces-based film company PRC Productions. An independent offering filled with irreverent humor, high camp and eye-popping special effects, Lady Belladonna’s Tales From The Inferno will make its debut on Friday, October 5, 2018, at the Borderlands Film Festival, with special appearances by cast and crew of the production.

We always knew we wanted to do a series of anthologies around the character of Lady Belladonna,” said writer/director David Salcido. “It just took a little longer than expected to find an audience for the first anthology, which is definitely not Hollywood blockbuster material. Having the movie up on Amazon Prime has helped us to do that, so it was inevitable that we would put out a second. I’m thrilled to announce that this time around we have raised the bar considerably, with an all-new look and sound to the Abyss, courtesy of our extremely talented post-production team. This is Lady Belladonna’s domain as I always envisioned it. I can’t wait to put it in front of audiences and, hopefully, build upon the fanbase we’ve already established.”

Lady Belladonna’s Tales From The Inferno picks up where Lady Belladonna’s Night Shades left off, with Perdition’s Mistress of Iniquity enjoying her status as Top Soul Broker of the Abyss. This time, however, she and her personal assistant Addy must contend with the annoying spirit of creativity, when film auteur Ed Wood drops in to make her an offer she can’t refuse. Interspersed with never-before-seen stories of vampire vengeance, misplaced curses, alien invasions and more tantalizing trips beyond the veil, Lady Belladonna’s Tales From The Infernoreunites Tawnya Bass as Lady Belladonna and Donny Prosise as her long-suffering minion Addy, while introducing Rafael Medina as film auteur Ed Wood.

Produced by Borderlands Media, in association with PRC Productions, Lady Belladonna’s Tales From The Inferno was written, compiled and directed by David Salcido. Production wrapped on May 29th at PRC Productions’ Arrowhead Center green screen facility. Creating spectacular visual effects to bring the Abyss to life is Carlos H. Tejeda, with outstanding sound design by Jorge Villarreal Jr. and original music by Enrique Ponce. Director of Photography is Troy Scoughton Jr. Executive Producer is Troy Scoughton Sr. p.g.a. Line Producer is Robert Dean. Producers are Troy Scoughton Jr. and David Salcido. The sophomore anthology is slated for limited theatrical release, before finding its place on Amazon Prime alongside the original.

PRC Productions is a New Mexico-based, full-service production company formed in June of 2010. With several award-winning shorts films, documentaries and commercials under its belt, PRC Productions currently has the feature film The Virus, the horror anthology Lady Belladonna’s Night Shades, the Grindhouse Double Feature: Knight Squad & Nunja, and the oral history documentary PBS series Pláticas available on Amazon Prime. PRC Productions has also produced and assisted with several other feature films including Radio Silence, Johnny Tabor’s Eaters, Mark Medoff’s The Heart Outright, The Lost Padre Mine, Frankenstein VS The Mummy, and Day Of The Mummy.

The Borderlands Film Festival will be held at the Telshor 12 Cinemas, located at 2811 N. Telshor Blvd in Las Cruces. 2019 Regional Actors Showcase

Now in our 6th year, the New Mexico Film Foundation is going regional with its New Mexico Actors Showcase. The Actors Showcase is an opportunity for New Mexico’s great acting talent to present themselves to the public. And the showcase is meant to help actors raise the bar on their professionalism.

This is how it works: Actors will submit a 2 minute video audition using a monologue or a scene with a reader off camera. The use of video auditions is becoming a more popular way of casting, so it is important that actors know how to make a great video, including proper lighting, sound, setting, and of course their acting ability. Judging will be based on these qualities.

When the actor submits their video audition, they will place themselves in one of 5 categories, based on either age or experience. 17 and under is for young actors and they must be in this category regardless of experience. 55 and older is a recognition of seniors wanting to enter the acting world or who have acting experience and want to demonstrate that there is a place for older actors. These actors do have the option of entering themselves in one of the 3 categories based on experience instead.

The experience-based categories are contingent on the number of roles they have had in film. Background or featured background do not count as Roles. The Beginner category is 0-10 roles, Intermediate is 11-20 roles and Professional is 21+ roles.

The submitted videos will be judged and the top 4 actors from each category will be invited to perform live on stage. This live event will be in February as part of the Las Cruces International Film Festival. The live “audition” will have a reader, camera person and director on stage. The camera will project the actor’s performance on a large screen behind them. The actor will perform their side or monologue, and the director will give them some adjustments. They will then perform again. Judges in the audience will score each actor and the top actor from each category will be awarded a prize. Additionally each winning actor will be invited to attend the statewide actors showcase in Albuquerque in March.

Why regional? In our five years of holding the actors showcase, there have been few if any participants from outside the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area. The New Mexico film foundation recognizes that: there is talent outside this area, who are interested in acting in film, and that travel issues do arise. The efforts of the New Mexico Film Foundation, to grow the film industry from within the state do extend beyond the ABQ-Santa Fe area and indeed to all corners of the state.

Alamogordo, NM— The Desert Light Film Festival day is April 26th, 2019.

The Desert Light Film Festival organizers announce the 2019 Desert Light Film Festival will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019, in Alamogordo, New Mexico.   Thanks to the financial support of TDS, our local cable, phone, and internet company, Desert Light Film Festival will host its 16th Festival and competition.  This competition gives students an opportunity to showcase their work, compete for prizes, and participate in seminars designed for young filmmakers. Desert Light is open to all New Mexico high school and middle school students, including students who attend public, private or charter schools, or who are home schooled.

Categories include drama/comedy, animation, music video, documentary, experimental film, and 30-second commercial. The criteria for all categories include production quality, creativity and originality, resourcefulness and entertainment value. Films are submitted and judged in either the high school or middle school division.

Sponsored by TDS, Desert Light offers prizes in every category and division. First Place awards are $100 each. Honorable Mention awards are $50 each. Barbara Mick, local TDS Coordinator of Marketing and Public Relations, will be on hand to personally present the awards for the winning films. Seminars this year will include Special Pyrotechnic Effects for Film, and Finding Your Acting Style. Other seminars will be announced.

The most valuable prize of $1,000.00 will also be awarded to that film judged Best of Festival.  This award comes in the form of a scholarship from NMSU Alamogordo which can be used at the Alamogordo campus, or the Las Cruces campus, when the winning student attends college.

The preferred method for submitting all student films for Desert Light Film Festival is via Vimeo.  Information about accessing the Vimeo account will be released later.  Films that cannot be submitted via Vimeo will still be accepted on disk. In this case, please submit individual, single DVDs for each film submission.

Locations of the festival this year include New Mexico State University Alamogordo, the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts and White Sands National Monument. Organizers of the 2019 Desert Light Film Competition include Dr. Ken VanWinkle, President of NMSU Alamogordo, K. Jan Wafful, Otero County Film Liaison; Barbara Mick, market manager for TDS; Jim Mack, Director of the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts, Laurie Anderson, Otero County Economic Development Council Business Development Director; Joan Griggs, festival director, and Dr. Bruce Martin.

Submit films anytime from now until Friday, March 15, 2019. Each entry requires a $5 entry fee which should be mailed along with your entry form to the Otero County Film Office, NMSU Alamogordo, 2400 N. Scenic Dr., Alamogordo, NM 88310. The entry form includes a “Use of Submissions” form to be signed by students over 18. Parents or teachers will sign for students under 18.  All forms, including the form explaining the Entry Rules, information about Judging and Awards, and Description of Categories are available. ALAMOGORDO SELECTED A WINNER IN THE 34th ANNUAL TELLY AWARDS

Alamogordo,NM –August 12, 2013 – The Telly Awards has named Alamogordo as a Bronze winner in the 34th Annual Telly Awards for their piece titled Film Sand & Space. With nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor.

HK Advertising in Santa Fe, New Mexico created the ad for Alamogordo.  HK took three key assets that are unique to Alamogordo and developed a very conceptual ad that showcased these assets.  Alamogordo known for White Sands National Monument, home to the New Mexico Museum of Space History and more than a hundred locations for Hollywood films, documentaries, music videos, television commercials, independent films, and principal photography shot in and around Alamogordo.   The ad was shot in keeping with New Mexico’s brand “New Mexico True”.

BIOGRAPHY

Ann Lerner heads up the City of Albuquerque’s Film Office, which is located in the Department of Economic Development, Mayor’s Office. The mission of the office is to promote and attract the film industry to the City of Albuquerque.  Ann says she has the best job in the city.  She has been Film Liaison for the city since 2003.

Job responsibilities for the film office include marketing, location scouting, production meetings, community walk-through, on-site visits, location follow-ups, and coordination of special screenings. She has been involved with job training, business recruitment, educational opportunities and community outreach.  Keeping ABQ Film Friendly is her number one goal.

Ann brings a twenty year background in the film industry to the office, as an owner/line producer for her own commercial film production company, specializing in TV commercials. She has produced local, regional and national television commercials, filming on location all over the United States, and Toronto.  She has a Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas in Special Education, and taught special needs children for four years, before changing careers and entering into the wacky world of film.

Ann serves on the APS Foundation Board, CNM Advisory Board, the University of Kansas Film Advisory Board, and was recently named a Women of Influence in 2013 by  Albuquerque Business First.

Ann has lived in Corrales since 1977 where she raised two sons, and many chickens.

Call for Entries is now open for the 2013 Desert Light Film Competition

The Desert Light Film organizers are searching for New Mexico high school and middle school students to participate in the 2013 Desert Light Film Festival on Friday, April 19, 2013. Presented by New Mexico State University Alamogordo and the Otero County Film Office, and sponsored by JC Penney, this competition will give students an opportunity to showcase their work, compete for prizes, and participate in seminars designed for young filmmakers. Desert Light is open to all New Mexico high school and middle school students, including students who attend public, private or charter schools, or who are home schooled. This festival is designed for any student who has an interest in film making.

This year the festival celebrates New Mexico’s Active Lifestyles incorporating History, Arts & Culture. The active New Mexican lifestyle of exploring in our state should bring out lots of creative ideas for filming. “Activity steeped in New Mexican culture” makes the documentary category perfect for covering historical topics. We hope students will dig into the history of our state, and of their area, and teach us how to experience new adventures. This could incorporate anything from a focus on native pottery and art classes to rock-climbing. Hiking and biking our state’s wilderness trails, or even exploring New Mexico parks, historical monuments, mineral springs and petroglyphs can make for action-packed films. The 30 second commercial is described this year as the New Mexico-New Tourism Initiative commercial. The film from any category or division that best represents New Mexico’s new “Site-Doing, Not Site-Seeing” theme, will receive the “New Mexico Active Lifestyle-Initiative Film Award” for $100, a special prize just for this year’s festival.

Sponsored by JC Penney through the JC Penney Foundation, Desert Light offers prizes in every category. First Place awards are $100 each. Honorable Mention awards are $50 each. Local JC Penneys store manager Omar Hamza will be on hand to personally present the awards for the winning films. Seminars this year will include Final Cut Pro, special effects makeup for film, and production techniques. Other seminars will be announced.

Please submit student films on DVD, standard format, MPEG2, in 4×3 or 16×9 format. This year there is a new directive for single DVD submissions. Please submit individual, single DVDs for each film submission. DO NOT submit multiple films on one DVD as was allowed in the past. If schools or students have something that won’t work with the criteria above, please email us and tell us what format you do have. We will try to work with you.

A special Film Briefing with Ranger Kathy Denton has been arranged at the White Sands National Monument following the Awards Ceremony. Whenever professionals come to film at the Monument, they have certain procedures to follow before they arrive, and while they are filming. This interactive briefing will teach you much about the protocol of filming in national parks and working with other agencies. Students will arrive at the White Sands before sunset, and then be able to film some fabulous footage. This is a very special opportunity to spend several hours at one of the sites kept especially for filming. This event is open just to students and teachers attending the Desert Light Film Festival.
